Attraction: Shiloh National Military Park

Took the family to Shiloh during Winter Break to see the site of the bloodiest battles fought during the Civil War.

Those that do not know history are doomed to repeat it. That is the most important thing I have learned in life from a historical perspective. In all, over 23,000 Americans were killed and wounded.

The battlefield itself is spread out and borders Mississippi as it was one of that largest battles in the Western Theater and Grant’s victory gave the Union forces a foothold in the region.

Grant’s forces were reinforced by 2 gunships after the first day of battle in April 1862 and coincidentally, the Dill Branch site where they docked is also the site of the Shiloh Indian Mounds.

The boys had I had a tremendous day learning about the Battle and seeing history first hand in our travels across the state. Although a longer drive than normal, we still made it in under 4 hours from the Chattanooga.

Y’all go be Tennesseans this week and see what your great state has to offer!
